Early Foundations and Formative Lessons
Sonja’s journey begins in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in a neighborhood filled with faith, family, and community. From an early age, she was surrounded by people who poured into her, shaping her sense of worth and resilience. Her grandmother, Esther, left a lasting imprint on her life, insisting that young Sonja recite a poster that hung in her home: “I am somebody because God don’t make no junk.” At the time, it was a lesson she didn’t fully understand, but in hindsight, it planted a foundation of confidence and self-belief that would guide her through the uncertainties ahead.
Even with these supportive influences, Sonja’s teenage years were marked by self-doubt and insecurity. She questioned her appearance, her identity, and her place in the world. Yet these challenges became a foundation for her leadership style: grounded, empathetic, and built on resilience.
Through faith and introspection, Sonja learned that joy and confidence come from within, not from outside validation, a principle that guides her work today.
Learning to Lead Through Challenges
Sonja’s path was not linear, and some of her most formative experiences came through professional setbacks. Being laid off three times in her early career was a jarring experience, leaving her to confront feelings of defeat and uncertainty. “Now what?” she remembers asking herself repeatedly, realizing that her stability, future, and value had been largely dictated by others.
It was in the wake of the third layoff that Sonja made a pivotal decision, she would no longer wait for someone else to define her worth. From the corner of her dining room table, armed with nothing but a laptop and determination, she launched her first podcast. That moment marked the beginning of her mission: to empower women to create visibility and influence on their own terms.
“Don’t wait to be chosen. Create your own platform and watch the world listen,” she shares, a philosophy born from this experience and now central to her work.
Finding Her Voice: Media and Mentorship
The true turning point in Sonja’s career came as she embraced podcasting and media as tools for leadership. In 2018, she founded Sistas with a Voice Podcast Network, aiming to help purpose-driven women turn their voices into authority, visibility, and income. She also created Launch Your Podcast in 30 Days, a program that guides women from concept to fully launched, monetized podcasts with strategic clarity. Her podcast, Inspiring Nations with Sonja Keeve, has grown into an international platform, producing over 200 episodes and reaching audiences in more than 164 countries. Through these conversations, she celebrates women leaders who are making an impact, creating visibility without performing, and building authority in their respective industries.
Sonja also hosts Her Voice Matters, a radio show focused on intentional leadership conversations, and LeadHerShift, a television series highlighting women navigating identity, leadership, and influence in real time. Sonja’s work goes beyond media production. She serves as an Assistant Faculty member at Strayer University, mentoring students in business courses and personal branding, helping emerging professionals translate knowledge into real-world opportunities. She has built a career where teaching, coaching, and hosting intersect, emphasizing actionable strategy and authentic leadership.
Guiding Principles: Authenticity, Faith, and Service
Throughout her journey, Sonja’s leadership is guided by three core principles: authenticity, faith, and service. She is deliberate about aligning her actions with her values.
Sonja reflects, “I’m always asking myself, ‘Does this align with who I am and what I’m called to do?’ If it doesn’t, it’s an easy no.”
This mindset allows her to focus on opportunities that create meaningful impact rather than external validation. Her philosophy extends to how she empowers other women. She encourages leaders to stop waiting for permission to be visible and influential, teaching them that clarity and alignment are the foundations of authority.
“Visibility without positioning doesn’t lead to influence. Authority is built when your voice is clear, your message is aligned, and your platform is used strategically,” Sonja shares, reflecting a practice honed from years of mentoring and media experience.
Recognition and Global Impact
Sonja’s approach has earned recognition both locally and globally. She was named the 2024 Emerging Business Leader of the Year by the Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce, an acknowledgment of her influence in media, entrepreneurship, and leadership development. Her clients and students testify to the transformative nature of her programs, with many noting that she demystifies podcasting and provides tangible steps for launching and monetizing their platforms.
Through her programs, workshops, and speaking engagements, she helps women build visibility, credibility, and additional income streams while maintaining balance and alignment with their values. By creating structured frameworks, Sonja turns what often feels overwhelming into clear, actionable steps.
Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, Sonja Keeve is committed to expanding her platforms, helping more women understand that their voice is valuable now, not later. She is preparing the release of her memoir, Always Keep Your Joy, sharing the deeper, more personal layers of her journey, alongside continuing her media work and speaking engagements. Her broader mission is clear: to create collaborative spaces where women support each other, leverage media strategically, and stop competing for limited attention.
Her message is both practical and empowering: “You don’t need to have everything figured out to begin. You just need the courage to take the first step.”
Sonja’s life and career exemplify this ethos, proving that leadership and influence are built through intentional action, resilience, and the consistent use of one’s voice.
