The Hidden Tax of Being the Reliable One
For two decades, Sheena Murphy was the person who could handle things. She was the one who fixed the at-risk accounts, hit the retention numbers, and absorbed the extra work. She built a formidable reputation on being entirely dependable.
But being the person who can handle everything comes with a heavy, invisible tax. Eventually, the weight of constant capability becomes indistinguishable from exhaustion. You survive, but you stop choosing.
Recognizing the Difference Between Capability and Capacity
Sheena Murphy is the Founder of Radiant & Rooted Coaching. She built a career securing millions in enterprise revenue, only to realize her own operating model was completely unsustainable. Today, she helps high-achieving women stop bracing for the next crisis and start choosing how they actually want to work and live.
Constructing the Architecture of Customer Success
Her professional foundation was built on understanding what makes people and businesses stay. She started in sales at Lee Enterprises before moving to Autotrader as an advertising consultant. In those roles, she learned how to read a room, manage client expectations, and deliver consistent revenue in high-pressure environments.
When a layoff at AutoTrader created a pivot point, she used the opportunity to leave high-pressure sales behind, moving into Customer success and joining ClearCompany as a Customer Success Manager. She mastered the art of client retention and account growth. By the time she moved to PageUp, she was designing the exact systems that kept enterprise software clients from walking away.
She drove a 96.8 percent customer retention rate across her portfolio. She launched onboarding initiatives that reduced new hire ramp time by thirty percent. Promoted to Director of Strategic Account Management, she built frameworks that forced her company to pay attention to where the revenue actually lived.
She developed a strategic account planning process that drove a fifteen percent year-over-year increase in Net Revenue Retention. She matched account review cadences to actual risk profiles, rather than relying on a generic calendar. She ensured executive sponsors were always in the room so account health never rested on a single relationship.
She even ran client feedback surveys alongside retention data to create leading indicators of account health. She built early-warning systems for her clients so problems surfaced before the renewal conversation.
But behind the metrics, a different reality was taking shape. She was carrying far more than she ever asked for help with. Then came the second layoff. The sudden stops forced a hard reckoning.
She realized she did not actually know who she was outside of what she produced for other people. The very skills that made her a corporate asset had turned into a personal cage.
Dismantling the Trap of Quiet Exhaustion
Today, she runs Radiant & Rooted Coaching to support women who look steady on the outside but are deeply tired on the inside. These are accomplished professionals facing burnout, layoffs, or massive career transitions. They are not failing. They are simply operating by expectations that no longer fit.
Corporate structures often extract maximum value from their most dependable people without establishing any boundaries. “Capable people get more of everything: more scope, more escalations, more ‘can you just,'” she explains. This relentless addition of responsibility happens precisely because the best employees never complain.
She understands this pattern intimately, and she identifies exactly how leadership makes it worse. “Leaders have to stop treating ‘she’ll figure it out’ as a compliment,” she states. It is a management failure disguised as praise, and it leads directly to quiet, inevitable resignations.
Through her practice, she interrupts this cycle. She does not push her clients toward forced reinvention for the sake of change. She helps them reconnect with their own internal baseline. She watches for specific shifts in behavior to measure whether a client is actually healing.
“Someone who used to answer every question immediately starts saying ‘let me check and get back to you,'” she observes. That half-second delay represents a massive internal shift. It proves the client is no longer acting from a fear of disappointing others.
She also listens closely to how her clients speak about their choices. “When a client stops saying ‘I should’ and starts saying ‘I want,’ that shows their nervous system has stopped bracing,” she notes. The shift in vocabulary proves they are finally making decisions from desire rather than pressure.
This approach produces tangible results. One client came to her unable to start a business after a layoff, despite having the desire to create her own business and not finding much traction applying for traditional roles. Instead of forcing a strategic pivot, they slowed down to locate where the hesitation lived physically.
They used a feelings wheel so the client could name the emotion accurately instead of staying in a vague state of unease. The root issue came down to fear, insecurity, and helplessness.
The client realized her hesitation stemmed from childhood insecurity, watching a single mother work in a high-risk field with no guarantee of steady income. Once the client recognized that her mother had always found a way to provide, the narrative shifted entirely.
The client realized she had inherited resilience, not danger. Within weeks, she began taking real steps toward building her company. The fear did not disappear, but it stopped dictating her professional choices.
Reclaiming the Right to Pause
Sheena Murphy spent twenty years building early-warning systems to protect other people’s stability. Now, she teaches capable women how to build those same protective systems for themselves. She proves that exhaustion is not the required cost of being competent. It is simply the cost of carrying what was never yours.
