In 2005, Danny Glassmann graduated with a bachelor’s degree in computer science. Rather than building a conventional technology career, he moved into higher education, where the systems he would spend the next two decades working on were human as much as technical: how institutions respond to conflict, allocate resources, build trust, and create conditions for people to belong. Twenty years later, technology is again part of his work, but not as a return to an abandoned path. It is one strand in a career shaped by leadership, organizational systems, and the consequences those systems have for people.
The Dean Who Builds Systems
Danny Glassmann is the founder and principal of Wired for Belonging™, a leadership and organizational strategy practice helping higher education and mission-driven organizations build more human systems, strengthen trust and belonging, and navigate AI without outsourcing consequential human judgment. Before founding the firm, he served as Associate Vice President for Student Engagement and Support and Dean of Students at The Ohio State University, where he led a broad portfolio within Student Life with responsibility for approximately $40 million in resources, more than 65 professional staff, and more than 250 student employees. He also served on the division’s executive leadership team, helping shape strategy, goals, performance expectations, and institutional responses alongside executive colleagues.
Twenty Years of Learning How Systems Work
The path there was not linear. Glassmann’s career moved through student affairs, residence life, student conduct, organizational leadership, and doctoral study before later roles at the University of Tennessee, San Francisco State University, and Ohio State. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Georgia, where his scholarship examined identity, belonging, and LGBTQ students’ experiences in higher education.
At Tennessee, he helped establish and served in a student ombuds function, providing students with a confidential place to navigate concerns and conflict. The experience reinforced a lesson that would follow him: trust depends not only on whether leaders are willing to listen, but also on whether people have a credible and accessible pathway to be heard.
At Ohio State, that orientation shaped work across student care, behavioral intervention, threat assessment, culture of care, and organizational operations. Glassmann later chaired the university’s student threat-assessment team and worked with colleagues across the institution to improve coordination, training, reporting, and response. He also helped update and expand Culture of Care resources so faculty and staff had more accessible guidance for recognizing concerns, responding appropriately, and connecting students with support.
The same systems approach showed up in less visible operational work. Within his portfolio, Glassmann established a regular rhythm with associate deans and department leaders for reviewing priorities, financial performance, staffing capacity, participation and usage patterns, and what teams were hearing from students, families, and campus partners. During a period of budget and staffing pressure, he worked with leaders and teams to bring related Ohio Union, Student Activities, and event functions into closer alignment, seeking to reduce duplication, improve coordination, use facilities and staff more effectively, and protect the programs, spaces, and employment opportunities students relied upon.
That systems view also shaped Ohio State’s response to significant changes in state anti-hazing requirements. Working with colleagues across the university, Glassmann helped advance a comprehensive campus-wide policy, expand education for students and employees, strengthen professional capacity for compliance and prevention, and support broader learning through statewide anti-hazing convenings. For Glassmann, the lesson was larger than any one issue: complex problems are rarely solved by a single policy, program, or office. Sustainable change happens when leaders understand how the parts of a system affect one another, involve the people closest to the work, invest in implementation, and remain accountable for what people actually experience.
When the Threads Converged
In May 2025, Glassmann left Ohio State and took an intentional pause before deciding what would come next. The transition was not a dramatic departure from higher education or a bet that artificial intelligence would become the field’s next crisis. Instead, it created space to reconsider how he wanted to use two decades of leadership experience, including parts of his background that had rarely occupied the same professional frame.
Later that year, he founded Wired for Belonging™, bringing together work on leadership, organizational strategy, trust, belonging, sustainable human capacity, and, increasingly, human-centered AI.
What AI Adoption Misses When It Starts With Technology
One part of that work now focuses on how institutions adopt artificial intelligence. Glassmann’s concern is less about the technology itself than about what happens when organizations introduce it without attending to the human system around it. The most common failure is treating AI adoption primarily as a technology project rather than a human and organizational change process. Institutions can become focused on selecting tools, writing policies, or improving efficiency without spending enough time asking how AI will affect trust, responsibility, professional judgment, and the people whose lives may be shaped by its use.
His approach starts with purpose and ends with accountability. I begin with the human purpose of the work, use AI to extend rather than replace human thinking, and end with a person who remains accountable for the decision. He encourages leaders to ask what assumptions are being made, what evidence supports the output, whose perspective may be missing, what needs to be verified, and who could be affected if the recommendation is wrong. AI can contribute speed, pattern recognition, and new possibilities. It cannot assume responsibility, understand an institution’s relationships in the way its people do, or be accountable for the consequences.
For Glassmann, care has to become structural. It cannot depend only on individual goodwill or compassionate leaders; it has to be reflected in how an organization allocates resources, clarifies responsibilities, prepares people, creates pathways for support and accountability, and examines whether its systems work as intended. He begins by looking for the distance between an institution’s stated values and people’s everyday experiences: where unnecessary friction persists, where responsibilities or reporting pathways are unclear, and where people have stopped raising concerns because they are unsure whether anything will change. Human-centered AI is one application of that larger leadership philosophy, not the whole of it.
A Career That Makes More Sense in Retrospect
From a distance, a computer science degree followed by two decades in student affairs can look like a detour. In retrospect, the continuity is easier to see. Glassmann has spent his career asking how systems shape human experience, where trust breaks down, how leaders make consequential decisions, and what institutions must build if belonging is to be more than an aspiration.
Technology has returned to the foreground, but the central questions have not changed. The work is still about designing systems that help people think, lead, and belong without giving away the human judgment the system ultimately depends on.
