The year was 1989. Orchard Road was packed with a quarter of a million people waiting for a celebration. A twenty-one-year-old DJ walked through the massive crowd toward a hydraulic lift. The machinery would soon raise her thirty meters into the air above the streets of Singapore.
Anxiety took hold completely. She froze as the sheer scale of the audience settled over her. The event support team guided her onto the platform. As the lift began its slow ascent above the sea of faces, she forced herself to slow her breathing.
The music finally started. The rhythm took over the space, and she found her voice again. That night, she watched thousands of strangers connect through shared energy. The experience left a permanent mark on how she viewed human interaction.
A Different Kind of Frequency
Today, Has A.R is the Founder of Positive Focus Pte Ltd and a communication and self-leadership strategist. She teaches executives, educators, and leaders that true influence requires far more than a microphone or a rehearsed script. She understands that the most powerful messages originate in the nervous system.
The DJ Booth as a Classroom for Human Behavior
Long before she stepped into corporate boardrooms, Has A.R spent years working as a club DJ in Singapore and Indonesia. The turntable was her first real laboratory for studying group dynamics. She learned to read the room and sense subtle shifts in collective mood. She adjusted the pacing of the music to respond calmly to unexpected situations.
“Before we can influence others, we need to regulate ourselves first,” she notes. This realization shaped her entire professional trajectory. She discovered that leading a room requires internal stability.
Her career expanded into media and education. She served as an educational consultant and hosted seventy-six episodes of Club M.A.G.I.C, a pioneering preschool television series in Singapore. She spent over a decade as a Kindermusik educator. These roles required keeping easily distracted audiences fully engaged.
She began integrating neuroscience, positive psychology, movement, voice and presence into her practice. The same approaches she used to engage children on television also proved valuable when working with adults in high-stakes environments. She saw how childhood experiences, including the messages we receive about our voice and how we express ourselves, can shape the way we communicate, respond and connect with others later in life.
Leading the Room Before Saying a Word
Through Positive Focus Pte Ltd, Has A.R now works with leaders who face immense pressure to perform. She sees a recurring problem in modern corporate environments. Executives focus entirely on what they are going to say, ignoring the physical state they bring into the room.
“People don’t communicate from words alone,” Has A.R explains. “They communicate from their internal state.” When a leader walks into a meeting feeling rushed or overwhelmed, the team immediately absorbs that tension. The words on the presentation slides cease to matter.
Her work centers on helping leaders understand how their internal state directly shapes their communication.
“When we show up calm and present, trust naturally grows, creating the psychological safety people need to speak up, contribute and collaborate with confidence.”
She focuses heavily on the education sector, delivering professional development for educators focused on communication, public speaking, literacy and phonics, rooted in her belief that teaching relies entirely on how effectively we communicate.
Recently, she coached a manager leading fifteen educators through a difficult organizational transition. Morale had plummeted under the new ownership. Staff members were actively considering resigning. The manager felt entirely unequipped to handle the crisis. Has A.R stepped in, but she did not teach the manager how to fix her team.
Instead, they focused on her C.R.E.A.T.E. Self-Leadership™ framework, a practical framework Has A.R developed to help leaders put self-regulation into action. The manager learned to recognize her perfectionist tendencies and control her physical responses under stress.
“A leader’s internal state becomes the team’s external experience,” Has A.R observes.
Although the external challenges remained, the internal shift was significant. The manager stabilized her department despite the ongoing external chaos. Senior management commended her growing clarity and confidence. Once the organization stabilized, the manager gained the clarity and self-awareness to recognize it was time for her own next chapter, a reflection of self-leadership in action.
The Music We Choose to Play
The young woman trembling on a hydraulic lift thirty meters above Orchard Road learned a lesson that most executives spend decades trying to grasp. You cannot fake a grounded presence. The crowd always knows when the person holding the microphone is out of breath.
Has A.R has spent over thirty years proving that effective leadership is a physical practice. She helps overwhelmed professionals find the quiet center of their own chaotic stages. Leadership is not about the volume of your voice, but the stillness behind it.
