I was born in a big traditional family in Pamplona, northern Spain. In 1998 I was a crew member in one of Christopher Columbus Caravels replicas and had the crazy chance of “Discovering America” by myself, which was a premonition because now I am and feel as American as Spaniard.
I am crazy about the All Blacks, The New Zealand national rugby team. I love how a country with less population than Madrid can consistently produce a team that is always one step ahead than the bigger and richer nations.
I dream about Hydro foiling with my kite and be as efficient as possible. I love the ocean and the wind, kite hydro foiling allows me to fly in a magic and silent carpet, and its in the middle of a windy ocean where I find one of my happy places.
In Pamplona it gets very cold during the winter. Every year we had at least one extra week without school because of the snow, we enjoyed it as much as my poor mum hated it, we used to build igloos, and throw snow balls to cars that couldn’t stop and chase us because of the frozen slope road.
In the digital world, the term 24/7 takes a new meaning, it really is every time all the time. What works for me is that everything that is professional is personal and vice versa, You just have to know how much blending you have to do in any particular moment, but there is no completely switching off from work or life at any moment.
I am single and don’t drink or smoke, for me exercise is more than just a physical activity, it is a way to vent and replenish.
In my college years Rugby was my sport, now I run and lift weights, but my happy place is definitely in the water, I windsurf and Kitesurf as much as I can, and being alone in the water with the wind as my engine allows me think and relax at the same time.
First impressions are very important. With time I have learnt to look first in the eyes, and then the body language of every new person that I meet.
I have always been blessed with having many mentors, different people with different attributes in different moments of my life.
Something that I have learned is that the right mentor might not be someone older or in a higher position that you. At different points in my life I have learnt what to do, and how to be from janitors, and how not to be from some CEO’s as well.
The digital world and its influence on society increases and evolves rapidly. One of the biggest challenges for me is to keep up with them, and recognize which changes are transferable to the companies I work with.
In 1994 I moved from Spain to North Carolina to work in one of the very first Online Newspapers, there we pretty much invented a new way to communicate, and had the chance to be an active witness and member of the whole digital revolution from day one.
In 1999 I was one of the founding members of Terra Networks, the first Digital Media operation for Hispanics in the U.S.
In 2005 I was hired by Telemundo (NBC’s Hispanic outlet) to help develop the Digital media operation, its content and sales strategy.
In 2008 in moved back to Spain in an effort to be with my father as much as possible, he had contracted Alzheimer’s, and was clearly deteriorating rapidly. 2008 to 2011 were the worst years in my life, I couldn’t understand why something like that could happen, and it took me some time to come to terms with my dad’s illness and death.
In 2011 I came back to Miami and was hired by Univision to oversee the digital programming and content day to day and strategy.
In 2013 I left Univision and founded Durruti Digital, a small Digital Transformation Boutique to help companies first survive and then thrive in the new digital world.
I help media companies by disrupting them.
In Media, most companies need to transform in order to survive, and they need to do it dramatically and fast. Most media companies are not used to the digital speeds, and now they are competing against very efficient companies like Facebook or Google. The necessary changes they need in order to have a shot at surviving in the new digital media and advertising landscape start form the core; the team, skillsets, processes, and products.
Not at all.
I have been “inventing” things all my life, and that means that I don’t know where I will be in 3 months.
Most of my college friends work in our home town, and they probably live very happy and full lives. I don’t remember the number of countries and companies I have been in, and I believe that that gives me a very unique perspective of life and work.
I am currently focused on bringing successful digital initiatives and products to the Central American region. They are ready now for companies that didn’t see them as a priority until recently.
My advice for entrepreneurs would be that in order to succeed the ingredients are 10% inspiration, and 90% perspiration. Having a good idea is great, but execution is everything.
I wish I could foresee my industry’s future, but I do think that AI is going to change the Media Landscape and the way we present content and advertising to audiences.
The companies that don’t invest in AI will get left behind, big players like Facebook and Google are fighting to take control of most of the advertising industry.
